Congratulations to our dedicated CJUK Chef, Gerry, who has been recognised as our ‘Chef of the Month’ for August 2018!
We asked him a few questions about his some of his experiences whilst being a chef and here is what he said…
How long have you been a Chef for?
24 years!
Why did you become a Chef?
Originally I didn’t want to be a Chef, I wanted to be a mechanic. I started as a KP at age 14/15 to earn some money and then moved on to work on starters and desserts.
I finished school and liked having the money, so rather than going to college I worked my up the kitchen and then went to college to get qualifications to complement my experience.
What is your favourite dish to cook and why?
I love cooking fish, but couldn’t pinpoint a particular dish.
What’s the strangest thing you’ve ever been asked to cook?
Cheesy mashed potatoes, absolutely vile! I was at a 5* hotel and they asked me to cook cheesy mash… I refused to try it…
What was your first job?
KP!
What is the best job you have ever had?
Probably Loch Fyne Hotel. The manager was brilliant and the staff, they had a strong team. It was good champagne there too!
What is the best thing about being a Chef?
Being creative in the presentation of food.
What is your guilty pleasure?
I love Chinese food and a kebab.
What three words sum up why you work for CJUK?
