We are proud to announce that the Cummins Mellor group of companies have been crowned the BIBAs Family Business of the Year 2019.
Colleagues from all three companies (CJUK, Cummins Mellor and Personnel Checks) were presented with the award alongside nineteen other fantastic Lancashire businesses at Blackpool Tower on the 13th September.
Michelle Mellor, our Managing Director, said:
“Our family values, philosophy and principles have guided us through the highs and lows for over 30 years and coming together as one big work family, this recognition is certainly a magnificent high for us all!
As much as I appreciate this award and as grateful as I am for it, the greatest reward I’ve ever been given is the simple opportunity to help build a real business family where every single member believes they can really achieve and be better by helping our people realise their true value and amazing potential.”
As a result of winning this prestigious award, the Cummins Mellor group will now join the BIBAs academy alongside the other winners to receive support for further growth.
Profits from the evening will be put towards the BIBAs foundation, which supports enterprise programmes designed to create the next generation of Lancashire business leaders.
Suzanne Carr at Age Concern Central Lancashire said that the family business sector is a “strong and stable foundation” upon which the local business community was built.
The Institute for Family Businesses (IFB) reports that family firms generate more than a quarter of gross domestic product to the UK economy, paying £182 billion in tax each year, more than the annual NHS budget.
Michelle added: “Congratulations to all the finalists and winners at this years’ BIBAs. A huge thank you to North & Western Lancashire Chamber for a job well done and of course to Age Concern.

Our family of businesses were established in 1990 when our Chairman, Richard Mellor, quit his job in hospitality and set up the business from scratch in his back bedroom.
In 1993, Michelle joined (and even did the odd stint as a Chef!) and has since become the Managing Director of all three of our businesses. Katie and Jack Mellor are the next generation of the Mellor family to join as Directors of CJUK and Personnel Checks alongside our growing work family.
We will continue to pride ourselves on being a family business with family values which is backed up by this prestigious award!
